Sangeet: A Celebration of Music and Joy

One extremely popular Hindu wedding tradition is the 'Sangeet,' typically held two or three days before the wedding. A Sangeet is a lighthearted and fun ceremony mainly centred around melody and dancing, and its name translates to 'music'. This much-loved festivity fundamentally symbolises family unity and love, and each Sangeet is a unique reflection of the families' personalities, expressed through the choice of songs and choreography to the themes of the performances.

Traditionally, a Sangeet was an all-women gathering that originated as a pre-wedding ritual, during which the women of the bride's family and community would come together to celebrate her upcoming nuptials. They would sing folk songs, offer blessings, share marital advice, and often tease the bride about married life. The songs usually contained humorous or sentimental lyrics containing wisdom passed down through generations.

In many cases, the Sangeet marks the first time both extended families meet, which allows them to spend time together before the ceremony. While typically now a joint celebration, the central role remains rooted in music and rhythm, symbolising unity and love. The guests express themselves through dance and heartfelt speeches, which include traditional songs, blessings, and advice, sometimes more humorous than deep. Nowadays, contemporary and popular music also plays a part.

Beyond the party atmosphere, the Sangeet holds deep, cultural and emotional significance. A bringing together of loved ones and a sharing of joy sets the tone and pace for the wedding, strengthening both mutual family ties and friendships. For many, it is one of the most cherished events leading up to the wedding.
