Legal Requirements

Barbados has long been one of the Caribbean’s most effortless and romantic places to say “I do.” The island is known for its natural beauty, warm hospitality, and well-organised marriage process, one of the simplest in the region. Couples are often surprised by how straightforward it is to marry here, even if they’re flying in just a few days before the ceremony. Still, knowing what documents you need and how the process works ensures a smooth start to your celebrations.

To obtain a marriage licence, couples must visit the Ministry of Home Affairs with:

Valid passports

Birth certificates

Return tickets

Proof of marital status:

  • If divorced: original or certified copy of the divorce decree

  • If widowed: death certificate of the late spouse

  • If never married: a simple declaration is normally sufficient

If either party has changed their name: legal documentation confirming the change.

Any documents not in English must be accompanied by an official translation. Once submitted, licences are usually issued the same day.

Barbados accommodates both civil and religious ceremonies. Civil weddings can be held almost anywhere: private villas, gardens, beaches, or traditional venues, while church weddings follow the individual requirements of the chosen denomination. Two witnesses over the age of 18 must be present for any ceremony.

After the wedding, your official marriage certificate is issued by the Registration Department and is fully recognised internationally.
